A whole new world is coming to Gatlinburg in 2014: Rocky Top Sports World
, a state of the art athletic center, will be opening doors and bringing in thousands of new faces to the Smoky Mountain area starting with its June 30 opening.
The new athletic complex will feature seven tournament-ready outdoor fields with innovative synthetic turf, ample track and field amenities, an 86,000-square-foot indoor facility, 10 full-size basketball courts, 17 volleyball courts, an indoor climbing wall and much more. The facility will span 80 acres and will rival world-class venues like those located in Orlando, Las Vegas and other prime destinations.
According to Lori Moore
, Rocky Top’s marketing manager, “the City of Gatlinburg and Sevier County joined together to fund the $22 million complex to attract state, regional, and national for competitive tournaments and believe that Rocky Top adds a new dimension to the area's existing appeal.”
We think these folks are on to something. Despite all its advanced features, the best thing about Rocky Top Sports World might just be its location! The new sports venue is less than 10 minutes from the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and charming downtown Gatlinburg. The strategic location will allow visiting athletes and their families to take advantage of the thousands of hotel rooms and ample entertainment options located across Sevier County and the Smoky Mountain area.
Construction at the facility, which is nestled right by Gatlinburg-Pittman High School, began in March of this year. In October, Rocky Top Sports World General Manager Steve Daugherty and Moore spoke with Inside Gatlinburg’s and city commissioner Mike Werner. Watch the video below to the scoop on the new facility.
The new sports facility will make the Smoky Mountains an enticing destination for groups and sports teams, and will spur the local economy with a hearty helping of the sports travel industry’s $8 billion pie. The facility will also bring new jobs to the area. Hiring for adminstrative and bookkeeping staff began this fall; expect openings for other positions this winter and into spring.
