Paw Paw tree near Pigeon ForgeDown here in Pigeon Forge the trees are still developing their color, and there are still plenty of green leaves just waiting to put on bright red, orange, and yellow. We are looking forward to a couple more weekends of gorgeous fall foliage. Persimmons ripened early and are now finished dropping their wonderful fruit, which adds a sweet autumn fragrance to the atmosphere. Paw paw trees are the stand-out stars this week...putting on a show of extreme green and yellow. Local gardeners are picking their final pods of okra. Who knew something so delicious also puts on a lovely flower?

Pigeon Forge shops and restaurants are beautifully decorated with fall scenes, hay bales, and caramels. There is nothing like the sights, sounds, and smells of Pigeon Forge and the Smoky Mountains. Photo opportunities abound. Tulip poplar trees turned brown a little early, and their leaves are providing a festive and fun crunch as we stroll along sidewalks and hike near back roads.

Mid-elevations (around 3,000 feet) as you go up into the Smoky Mountains have great color. The brightest brilliant reds have now faded into a rich burgundy. Most of the hardwood trees at the tippy top of the Smoky Mountains (around 4,500 feet) are now leafless because of high winds and storms.  It is a wonderful time of year for a scenic drive over to Cherokee, NC. It is the best way to view the leaves at every possible elevation. Who knows? You might even see an elk. Pigeon Forge truly is the best central location to rent a cabin and take pictures that capture every phase of autumn leaf color.
