		Historical Information The Pigeon Forge area's heritage runs deep. Sevier County is home to Pigeon Forge and Tennessee's eighth oldest city, Sevierville, founded in 1795. One of six "villes" in Tennessee, it was known as "Forks of the River" because it lay at the banks of the Little Pigeon River and the West Prong of the Little Pigeon. Gatlinburg was known as White Oak Flats because of the many white oaks found there. Pigeon Forge was home to the area's local iron forge on the banks of the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River. Like the Pigeon River in neighboring Cocke County, the Little Pigeon's namesake is the now-extinct passenger pigeon that once darkened the skies when flocks took flight. More Historical Information!
