Ken Jenkins, “The Father of Wilderness Wildlife Week,” had this to say about the event: “The natural history of the region shall combine with the rich history and folklore of this mountain region through a wealth of descendants of the area which is not a national park and once was their family home. We believe that a deeper attachment to the mountains can be had by all who participate.”

See the Synchronous Fireflies in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

gatlinburg-fireflies

You might have seen fireflies flickering their lights after dark before, but have you ever  seen them synchronize with each other? There are at least 19 different species of fireflies that live within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Synchronous Fireflies are one of them. These are one of the rare species in the world known to synchronize their flashing patterns.

Seeing fireflies sparkling in the night is magical, but seeing a vast carpet of them flashing all in time with each other is truly unforgettable. Sometimes they will all flash in unison, and sometimes the flash will move through in a wave across the hillside. These little creatures are very special and their spectacular flashing mating dance takes place between May and June during a short two-week window.

Why Do the Fireflies Synchronize?

No one really knows why the fireflies flash together. One theory is that males are competing and they all want to be the first to flash. Or, another theory is that if the males all flash at once they will have a better chance of being noticed, so that the females can make comparisons between them.

Experiencing This Natural Phenomenon

During this peak firefly display period, you will have a chance to see this amazing display of natural beauty. Great Smoky Mountains National Park organizes a shuttle service that will take you from the Sugarlands Visitor Centre to the Elkmont Viewing area. This is where a huge population of synchronous fireflies can be found.

The first shuttle leaves the main parking lot at around 7pm. The shuttles will start to return from Elkmont later in the evening when they are full, which will likely be around 9:30pm and they will continue to run until everyone has returned.

The viewing area at Elkmont consists of small paved areas and walking trails and the park rangers will be in the area in order to provide information.

Winning Tickets Via the Lottery System

In order to ride the shuttle and view the fireflies, you must acquire a pass. The number of parking spaces and the capacity of the shuttle is limited. Due to the limited number of spaces, the parking passes will be distributed via a lottery.

It is free of charge to enter the lottery and it will open on 12pm on Friday April 29th. The lottery will close on Monday May 2 and the winners will be chosen, with the results to be announced on May 10th. The winners will be charged $1.50 and they will be awarded a parking pass. If you win a parking pass, there will be no rain checks, transfers or refunds.

In order to use the parking pass the lottery winner must be within the vehicle and must present their photo identification before the vehicle will be admitted to the parking area. Only one application can be completed per household. This is a fair way of giving everyone a chance to obtain a pass for this very high demand event.

Everything You Need To Know About Dollywood 2016

Dollywood

dollywood 2016

Entertainer and Tennessee native Dolly Parton is no wallflower. Her vivacious energy was what inspired Dollywood, a theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. While the park is widely popular with several returning visitors each year, there are some things you might not know about Dollywood 2016.

Dollywood 2016 Season Opening

DollywoodThe theme park opened its doors for the 31st operating season on March 19th, 2016. Each season, Dollywood attracts over three million guests with thrilling rides, concerts and musical events – including appearances by Dolly herself as well as many other national favorites.

In fact, Dollywood’s season is going to be better than ever with the recent changes, additions and upcoming events. Plan your trip to Dollywood to see what all of the buzz is about!

The Lightning Rod Is Ready to Strike

The Lightning Rod is the newest ride at Dollywood and is projected to launch in the beginning of April 2016. It will be the world’s first launched wooden coaster and the fastest wooden coaster in the world. The coaster will have a 1950s and 1960s hot rod car theme with cars modeling 1950s hot rods.

Hold on tight, as this thrilling ride will reach up to 73 miles per hour and will feature 12 airtime drops, making you feel like you are coming out of your seat. Due to the urethane wheels on the steel railing, the roller coaster also will have a surprisingly smooth ride.

This new roller coaster is the latest addition in a $300 million park investment, which also includes the FireChaser Express, which was launched for the 2014 season. Are you brave enough to jump on the Lightning Rod this season at Dollywood?

31st Annual Dolly Parton Homecoming Parade

DollywoodOn May 6th Dollywood will be filled with music, color and excitement for the 31st Annual Dolly Parton Homecoming Parade. Beginning at around 6pm on the Pigeon Forge Parkway, the parade traditionally features marching bands, baton twirlers, entertainers from the local area, numerous floats, horses and even the famous Dolly Parton herself.

This lively event is the largest parade in the region, drawing more than 50,000 visitors that line the parkway of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The parade will begin near traffic light #6 and will head northbound toward Sevierville to traffic light #3. Dolly Parton herself is the grand marshal of the parade and she will be riding along, waving and smiling at everyone in the crowd. Not only do you need to get to the parade early to save a spot, but be sure to book lodging reservations in advance too– it’s a popular event!

Visiting Dollywood

DollywoodWell, what are you waiting for? Dollywood 2016 is ready for you to visit. Soon enough, Dollywood Splash Country will also be open, so you and the kids can have even more fun this spring and summer. Keep your eye open for special Dollywood packages and events such as Dollywood Thrills in the Hills on April 8th-9th where rides are open for an extended period of time.
