Top 5 Kid Hikes in the Smoky Mountains

shutterstock_304958723

Top 5 Kid Hikes in the Smoky Mountains

What could be better than going out with your kids on a sunny day and exploring the beauty of nature? Going on hikes in the Smoky Mountains is a great way to bond as a family, be active and learn about the outdoor world. Pack some snacks and water and head out for an adventure on one of these kid hikes in the Smoky Mountains.

1.) Elkmont Nature Trail

The Elkmont Nature Trail is a great kid hike because it is short and filled with opportunities to learn about the forest ecosystem. Although the self-guided walk is less than a mile long, it is designed to educate visitors about how the landscape evolves from time to time. There is even a point on the trail where you can see the traces of the railroad underneath the new forest growth. While the kids are enjoying looking at tracks, the parents can pick up a brochure and read about the areas history.

2.) Laurel Falls Trail

Top 5 Kid Hikes in the Smoky MountainsThis scenic trail was originally created in 1932 to provide local fire crews with access to Cove Mountain in case of a forest fire. It is a paved trail, so it’s a lot easier for little feet to navigate than trails with bumps and exposed tree roots. Another reason the Laurel Falls Trail is named a top kid hike is because of the impressive waterfall at the end. This a gorgeous spot for photo opportunities, but make sure you supervise your children—there are some steep drop offs and slippery rocks near the falls themselves. We also strongly recommend starting your hike early in the morning to beat the crowds, as this is a popular trail.

3.) Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail

Parents with newborns and infants will love the Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail because it is the only trail in the park that is wheelchair accessible. Not only does this mean it is a flat kids hike, but it also means parents can easily take a stroller on the hike as well. This half-mile, circular route is great for people of all ages to get some fresh air. Pick up a guide booklet at the trail head for more information about the trail. As you wind along this relaxing stroll next to the stream, you will see the remains of the old Smoky Mountain vacation homes from the early 1900’s.

4.) Porter’s Creek Trail

Top 5 Kid Hikes in the Smoky MountainsThis trail is a great kids hike in the Smoky Mountains for families who are looking for a moderate hike through quiet forests filled with waterfalls and wildflowers. It is a four-mile journey, and it will take you past a cemetery from the early 20th century, the remnants of an old mountain community and the 19th century John Messer farm site. The trekk conveniently starts down a gravel road near the Greenbrier entrance to the Smoky Mountain National Park.

5.) Alum Buff Cave Trail

This is one of the most popular trails in the park. When you see the stunning views from the top lookout, you will understand why. Alum Buff Cave Trail is a beautiful trail divided into two sections. The first part leads up to Alum Bluff Cave which is an old mine. From that point you can turn back if the little ones are tired, or continue to the second part which takes you to the top of LeConte Mountain. This is a great hike for kids who have previous hiking experience because it is longer than the other kid hikes mentioned, totaling 11 miles round trip.

These are just a few of the best kid hikes in the Smoky Mountains. It is never too early to hike the wilderness with your little ones and start teaching them the importance of nature. Once you cross these off your list, you can also try our list of Beginner Hiking Trails in The Smokies.

Ken Jenkins, “The Father of Wilderness Wildlife Week,” had this to say about the event: “The natural history of the region shall combine with the rich history and folklore of this mountain region through a wealth of descendants of the area which is not a national park and once was their family home. We believe that a deeper attachment to the mountains can be had by all who participate.”

See the Synchronous Fireflies in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

gatlinburg-fireflies

You might have seen fireflies flickering their lights after dark before, but have you ever  seen them synchronize with each other? There are at least 19 different species of fireflies that live within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Synchronous Fireflies are one of them. These are one of the rare species in the world known to synchronize their flashing patterns.

Seeing fireflies sparkling in the night is magical, but seeing a vast carpet of them flashing all in time with each other is truly unforgettable. Sometimes they will all flash in unison, and sometimes the flash will move through in a wave across the hillside. These little creatures are very special and their spectacular flashing mating dance takes place between May and June during a short two-week window.

Why Do the Fireflies Synchronize?

No one really knows why the fireflies flash together. One theory is that males are competing and they all want to be the first to flash. Or, another theory is that if the males all flash at once they will have a better chance of being noticed, so that the females can make comparisons between them.

Experiencing This Natural Phenomenon

During this peak firefly display period, you will have a chance to see this amazing display of natural beauty. Great Smoky Mountains National Park organizes a shuttle service that will take you from the Sugarlands Visitor Centre to the Elkmont Viewing area. This is where a huge population of synchronous fireflies can be found.

The first shuttle leaves the main parking lot at around 7pm. The shuttles will start to return from Elkmont later in the evening when they are full, which will likely be around 9:30pm and they will continue to run until everyone has returned.

The viewing area at Elkmont consists of small paved areas and walking trails and the park rangers will be in the area in order to provide information.

Winning Tickets Via the Lottery System

In order to ride the shuttle and view the fireflies, you must acquire a pass. The number of parking spaces and the capacity of the shuttle is limited. Due to the limited number of spaces, the parking passes will be distributed via a lottery.

It is free of charge to enter the lottery and it will open on 12pm on Friday April 29th. The lottery will close on Monday May 2 and the winners will be chosen, with the results to be announced on May 10th. The winners will be charged $1.50 and they will be awarded a parking pass. If you win a parking pass, there will be no rain checks, transfers or refunds.

In order to use the parking pass the lottery winner must be within the vehicle and must present their photo identification before the vehicle will be admitted to the parking area. Only one application can be completed per household. This is a fair way of giving everyone a chance to obtain a pass for this very high demand event.

Everything You Need To Know About Dollywood 2016

Dollywood

dollywood 2016

Entertainer and Tennessee native Dolly Parton is no wallflower. Her vivacious energy was what inspired Dollywood, a theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. While the park is widely popular with several returning visitors each year, there are some things you might not know about Dollywood 2016.

Dollywood 2016 Season Opening

DollywoodThe theme park opened its doors for the 31st operating season on March 19th, 2016. Each season, Dollywood attracts over three million guests with thrilling rides, concerts and musical events – including appearances by Dolly herself as well as many other national favorites.

In fact, Dollywood’s season is going to be better than ever with the recent changes, additions and upcoming events. Plan your trip to Dollywood to see what all of the buzz is about!

The Lightning Rod Is Ready to Strike

The Lightning Rod is the newest ride at Dollywood and is projected to launch in the beginning of April 2016. It will be the world’s first launched wooden coaster and the fastest wooden coaster in the world. The coaster will have a 1950s and 1960s hot rod car theme with cars modeling 1950s hot rods.

Hold on tight, as this thrilling ride will reach up to 73 miles per hour and will feature 12 airtime drops, making you feel like you are coming out of your seat. Due to the urethane wheels on the steel railing, the roller coaster also will have a surprisingly smooth ride.

This new roller coaster is the latest addition in a $300 million park investment, which also includes the FireChaser Express, which was launched for the 2014 season. Are you brave enough to jump on the Lightning Rod this season at Dollywood?

31st Annual Dolly Parton Homecoming Parade

DollywoodOn May 6th Dollywood will be filled with music, color and excitement for the 31st Annual Dolly Parton Homecoming Parade. Beginning at around 6pm on the Pigeon Forge Parkway, the parade traditionally features marching bands, baton twirlers, entertainers from the local area, numerous floats, horses and even the famous Dolly Parton herself.

This lively event is the largest parade in the region, drawing more than 50,000 visitors that line the parkway of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The parade will begin near traffic light #6 and will head northbound toward Sevierville to traffic light #3. Dolly Parton herself is the grand marshal of the parade and she will be riding along, waving and smiling at everyone in the crowd. Not only do you need to get to the parade early to save a spot, but be sure to book lodging reservations in advance too– it’s a popular event!

Visiting Dollywood

DollywoodWell, what are you waiting for? Dollywood 2016 is ready for you to visit. Soon enough, Dollywood Splash Country will also be open, so you and the kids can have even more fun this spring and summer. Keep your eye open for special Dollywood packages and events such as Dollywood Thrills in the Hills on April 8th-9th where rides are open for an extended period of time.

Book your Pigeon Forge hotels near Dollywood in advance, so you can find lodging close to the park. If you need any help with Dollywood cabin rentals, discount tickets or Dollywood packages, we are here to help!

Understand the Amenities of Your Pigeon Forge Cabin Rental

fireplace pf

There’s nothing like easing yourself into a bubbling pool of hot steamy water at the end of a long day of sightseeing, hiking, and exploring. When looking for Pigeon Forge cabin rentals with mountain views, having a hot tub is an excellent perk that will add a lot of enjoyment to your getaway.

However, perhaps you have seen advertisements for “Pigeon Forge cabin rentals with hot tubs” and “Pigeon Forge cabin rentals with Jacuzzis”. What is the difference between a hot tub and a Jacuzzi, and should you be paying attention to this when you are booking a place to stay?

Are Hot Tubs and Jacuzzis Different?

These terms are often used interchangeably, so what is the difference between the two? The key to understanding this is to know that Jacuzzi is a brand name. The Jacuzzi company produces a range of luxurious bathroom products including bathtubs and walk in showers – but their most well-known products are hot jetted tubs. The Jacuzzi brothers were the ones to pioneer the hydrotherapy pump system back in 1956, when hot tubs were just wine barrels filled with hot water.

So, “Hot Tub” refers to any heated tub designed for relaxing, and “Jacuzzi” is one of the most popular brands of hot tub. It’s not uncommon for an item to become known as the most popular brand name associated with it. For example, you might blow your nose with Kleenex rather than calling it facial tissue. You might clean the living room carpet with the Hoover rather than referring to it as a vacuum cleaner.

These brand names become a way of referring to the product and the habit carries on even when the product isn’t of that brand name. That is why you might have heard someone calling another type of Hot Tub a “Jacuzzi”- simply because the brand name has stuck and has been used to describe all hot tubs. Of course, Jacuzzi isn’t the only brand of hot tub, and there are many other good ones, such as Hot Spring Spas, Bullfrog Spas, Sundance Spas, Marquis, Dimension One and Cal Spas.

This is why it can be hard to tell what to expect from the description of the vacation rental you are booking. Someone might mention Pigeon Forge hotels with a Jacuzzi, but they might just be referring to a generic hot tub of another brand. They could mention a hot tub and it turns out that they have a Jacuzzi brand tub.

It’s really hard to tell from the description, so if the hot tub is a very important factor you can always give them a call and ask for more info. How big is it? How many people can sit comfortably? Does it have jets? Is the hot tub outside or inside? Do you have to pay an extra fee for using it? Figure out all of this in advance so that you will know what to expect when you arrive at your cabin rental in Pigeon Forge.

Feeling more of a summer time cool-down instead? Check out Pigeon Forge cabin rentals with a pool or Pigeon Forge hotels with an outdoor pool.
