Durango Arts and Culture

Here in Durango, the landscape and lifestyle of the Colorado southwest are interpreted through sculptures, paintings, drawings, jewelry, photography, weavings, writings, music, movies, film, and live performances. Durango has a vibrant art scene and more than a dozen art galleries can be found nestled into historic buildings, or tucked quietly away in the hills.

Durango hosts a myriad of special events centered around our appreciation of the arts. Art festivals and exhibits of local, regional, and national artists and are common throughout the year. A few of our annual events include the Durango Quilt Festival, the Main Avenue Juried Arts Festival, and the Durango Film Festival. For details on these and other events, check our special events calendar.

Fun Fact: Many popular movies were filmed in the Durango area, including: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, National Lampoon's Vacation, City Slickers, How the West Was Won, and Cliffhanger. Also, Louis L'Amour wrote the Sackett Series, a set of western novels, while staying at The Strater Hotel in downtown Durango.

Durango Bluegrass Meltdown

April 13-15, 2007

The Durango Bluegrass Meltdown has quietly attained a reputation as a small, well-organized festival, and a favorite of many of the performers who have played here. It’s an indoor festival—the three cozy venues are all within walking distance of each other in the historic district of downtown Durango, Colorado. The maximum audience size is 250 in each of the venues, which creates an intimate setting for both performers and their audience. Bluegrass music takes over the town for the weekend with a 22-bank line-up. Many of the restaurants and bars in town have live bluegrass performers. Jamming takes place in coffee shops, restaurants, hotel lobbies, street corners and virtually anywhere two or more instruments are brought out of their cases.

Come experience the fabled waters of the Durango area, where you'll find some of the best fishing in the country. The Animas River runs through town and boasts Colorado's newest and best section of Gold Medal Waters. Another amazing location for fishing, Vallecito Lake lies in a steep and pristine valley northeast of Durango. And that's not all, the San Juan, Piedra, and Dolores Rivers are all located within a short drive from Durango and boast some of the best fishing in Colorado and the US.
Whitewater Rafting and Kayaking
Visitors can enjoy a half-day or full-day guided raft trip, take on the river solo in a kayak or canoe, or simply wade along its sandy and rocky banks with the family dog and watch the boaters float by. Local rafting companies, guides, and outfitters will help you pull together everything you need to spend an unforgettable day on the river. Raft it, boat it, or float it, but don't leave Durango without experiencing it on the river.
