Summer Gas Giveaways!

What’s the best kind of gasoline for your car: regular or premium? If you are a visitor to Pigeon Forge this summer, you might answer that the best kind of gasoline is free gasoline. And you’d be right. This summer, the city of Pigeon Forge is giving away 8,500 gallons of gasoline to Pigeon Forge visitors as part of The Great Gas Giveaway. That’s as much as a whole tanker truck full of fuel! That's right, you have the opportunity to win thirty dollars in free gasoline just by visiting the city of Pigeon Forge this summer!

Members of The Gas Patrol will be out in full force looking to randomly give visitors a certificate good for thirty dollars in gas redeemable at Pigeon Forge gas stations. Winners may redeem the gas certificates in the Pigeon Forge Welcome Center on the Parkway in Pigeon Forge.

The Gas Patrol intends to give away these certificates at random throughout the city through the month of July. The lucky winners could be anywhere, at Pigeon Forge restaurants, theaters, or even the many shops around town.

The first winners were playing a game of mini-golf when members of The Gas Patrol approached, saying “today is your lucky day” and handing over a certificate for free fuel. The promotion has already made national news, and there is plenty of gasoline left to giveaway. So make plans to head for Pigeon Forge, you might just have the chance to fill up on the best kind of gasoline around, the free kind!

Bloomin' Barbeque and Bluegrass

Downtown Sevierville is the place to be the weekend of May 19th! Admission to the Bloomin' Barbeque and Bluegrass festival is free, and you can eat wonderful down-home, slow-cooked barbeque while jamming to Smoky Mountain bluegrass tunes. The line-up of artists this year include the ever popular Ricky Skaggs as well as The Grascals.

The weekend is not limited to food and music, either! Creative artists and crafters will be onsite demonstrating their skills and selling their wares. Parking will be available in the lots at First Baptist Church, Old Suntrust Bank on Court Avenue, and several other downtown lots. Festivities on Friday, May 19th begin at five and last until 11 p.m.; things will get rolling the 20th at 11 a.m. and last until 11 that evening.

Save Gas, Relax, and Ride the Trolley...

Gas prices are absurd lately; traffic in Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, and Gatlinburg is insane with all of the construction going on. So why not save some money and stress and sit back in a quaint, old-fashioned trolley and enjoy the summer-time city views as you are chauffeured around town in style? The Fun Time Trolley is just that - a fun time for all riders! Here's the information you need to plan your route:

Schedule: Daily 8:30 a.m. - Midnight, early March through October. Daily 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m., November and December. On Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day the trolley is closed.

Fares: The North Parkway, South Parkway, Dollywood, Dolly's Splash Country, Courthouse, and Wears Valley routes all cost $0.25 per ride; the Gatlinburg Welcome Center route costs $0.50 per ride, slightly more than the rest but still a deal.

Routes: South Parkway: The South Parkway trolley leaves Patriot Park and travels north to Traffic Light #6, then turns westbound onto Pine Mountain Road. The trolley goes as far as the Mainstay Suites before returning to the Parkway. This trolley then travels to the south city limits serving campgrounds in the area, Boyd’s Bears, and the Dixie Stampede before returning to Patriot Park.

Gatlinburg Welcome Center: This trolley leaves from Patriot Park and travels non-stop to the Gatlinburg Welcome Center on the spur just outside of Gatlinburg and then returns to Patriot Park. The hours of operation for this trolley are subject to the schedule of Gatlinburg’s city trolleys.

Dollywood Trolley: The Dollywood Trolley leaves Patriot Park and travels to and from Dollywood continuously. The Trolley runs thirty minutes before Dollywood opens and through the evening until everyone is returned to Patriot Park.

Dolly's Splash Country: The Splash Country Trolley leaves Patriot Park, travels to Splash Country, and returns to Patriot Park.

Wears Valley: The Wears Valley Trolley leaves Patriot Park and travels north on Teaster Lane through the Belz Mall/Riverview Mall area to Traffic Light #2 on the Parkway. From Traffic Light #2, the trolley continues to Community Center Drive, McGill Street, and then onto Wears Valley Road where it services area campgrounds and other businesses as it continues westbound to the Pigeon Forge city limits before returning to Patriot Park by the same route.

Courthouse: The Courthouse Trolley leaves Patriot Park and travels north on Teaster Lane passing through the Belz Mall/Riverview Mall area then enters the Parkway northbound at Traffic Light #2; it continues north into downtown Sevierville before turning around at the Sevier County Courthouse. Featured stops include Tanger Five Oaks Mall, Wal-Mart, Kmart, and the shops at River Place.

The Main Street trolleys run through Sevierville every 20 to 25 minutes. Wears Valley trolleys run through Pigeon Forge every 40 to 45 minutes. Dollywood trolleys run every 15 to 20 minutes. Dolly's Splash Country trolleys run every 15 to 20 minutes. Gatlinburg Welcome Center trolleys run every 25 to 30 minutes. Of course, these times may vary due to traffic flow during peak tourism days, car shows, and holiday weekends.

Update on Belle Island

Engineers working on the Jake Thomas Farm have discovered an archeological area with three ancient Indian burial sites as well as other artifacts like pottery and stone tools. The leaders in Pigeon Forge purchased 35 acres of land on the Jake Thomas Farm for $17.5 million in 2005, and with the recent archeological findings, the purchase could end up costing the city of Pigeon Forge anywhere from $27,000 to $162,000 extra and eight to 18 weeks of delay in the planned construction of a new Fun Time Trolley station and 2,000-space parking lot.

The land purchased in 2005 was also to be the site of a new shopping development, Belle Island. All plans have been put on hold at this time.
