Dolly Parton Concert to Benefit New Hospital

Legendary singer Dolly Parton will contribute 1 million dollars to construction of a larger hospital in the Pigeon Forge area, a donation made possible by Dolly’s personal donation of half a million dollars as well as a rare benefit concert to be held in May that will raise the same amount. The new hospital, a $90 million dollar investment complete with a cancer center, will open in 2009 and replace an aging hospital that has become too small for the growing Pigeon Forge area immensely popular with vacationers visiting the Smoky Mountains. Dolly’s contribution to the hospital’s public fundraising campaign will be used to furnish the new hospital with additional amenities

Fans of Dolly Parton should mark their calendar for May 20, 2007, the date of the rare Dolly Parton benefit concert. The concert will be held at Smokies Stadium. “This is going to be something we're all going to be proud of and just know I'll do whatever I can to help,” Dolly told hospital employees. True to her passion for singing, Parton also shared a song she wrote last year, Shine On, she said captured how she felt about the new hospital (watch a video of Dolly sing). As a native of the Pigeon Forge area, many of Dolly’s own family members were treated at the hospital to be replaced. “My own dad who passed away a few years back had a stroke and they made sure he got the best care he could get there," Dolly said.

Dolly Parton has yet again proven her generosity. In addition to Dollywood and Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge that provide employment for many locals, Dolly started the ‘Imagination Library,” a program to help young children in Tennessee read. The program sends out a new book each month to communities that participate in the program. To read more about the Imagination Library, click here.
