5 Tips for Best Rafting in the Smokies

Our Great Smoky Mountains and Pigeon Forge are full of fun-filled, outdoorsy activities for spring and summer!  Many locals and out of towners love to go rafting at three different locations.  Choose between the Big Pigeon River, which happens to be ranked the #3 River in America, Ocoee and the Nantahala River and get out on the water!

Whether it is your first time racing down the waterway or you’re an experienced rafter, here are five tips that will ensure you have an amazing time!

1. Always remember river etiquette.

a. Be mindful and being courteous to your fellow rafters and do not be rude as you are rushing to down the rapids.

2. Wear water-friendly clothing and shoes. AND bring a change of clothes!

a. You WILL get wet. This is inevitable so be prepared.
b. As we all know, it can get a little uncomfortable sitting in wet britches for a long period of time.  Bring some comfy clothes to change into after you get off the river!

3. Know your resistance level.

a. Do not try to show it in front of your friends because chances are you could get hurt if you hit a rapid wrong or the current pulls you the wrong way.  Know your levels and don’t push them.  Just have fun!

4. Make sure you bring a waterproof camera.

a. If you are going to bring a camera, make sure it is waterproof. It WILL get wet!

5. Wear water-resistant sunblock!

a. On sunny or ESPECIALLY cloudy days, the reflection off the water is going to make you look sun kissed so be sure to be prepared and wear ample amounts of sunblock!
