Where is Arrowmont?
Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts is located in the heart of Gatlinburg at 566 Parkway. The hillside campus feels private and quaint yet provides easy access to the hustle and bustle of downtown, creating the best of both worlds. Arrowmont’s main entrance is located right next to Anakeesta on School Drive, but you can also enter the campus along Baskins Creek Bypass. Arrowmont is open year-round from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.
Arrowmont History
Arrowmont originated in 1912 as the Pi Beta Phi Settlement School. The school provided education to a once remote community that lacked formal schooling and was also the site of the first medical clinic in the area. Curriculum in mountain handicrafts was added to preserve skills and livelihood for residents. In 1945, the signature summer workshop program was launched. This program continues to see people from all across the U.S. travel to the Smoky Mountains to take art classes.
Free Public Galleries
There are four dedicated exhibition spaces at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts that are free to the public. There are also many small art displays in halls and studios across campus. Exhibits host work from Arrowmont instructors, artists-in-residence, pieces from the school’s permanent collection, national and international artists and craftspeople. The Arrowmont Gallery in downtown Knoxville is the school’s first permanent off-campus exhibition space.
The Supply Store & Gift Shop
Arrowmont’s Supply Store is Gatlinburg’s only full-service art supply store. Here, you can shop for basic, must-have art supplies and tools. Arrowmont’s Showcase Gallery is also housed in the Supply Store and represents work from over 60 artists with an Arrowmont connection. From handcrafted pottery and prints to intricately designed jewelry and clothing, you can shop for the perfect gift for yourself or a loved one and support a local artist with your purchase.
Community Classes
Community classes range anywhere from 3-8 hours and are taught by local artists and makers. Most classes invite students of all experience levels to learn a new skill and complete a project at Arrowmont, although there are a few classes that require prior experience. Both kids classes and adult classes are offered, and all materials will be provided during the session. Because class size is limited, early registration is recommended.
National Workshops
Workshops allow a longer, more concentrated learning experience for Arrowmont students 18 and older. They span a weekend, one week, or two weeks and are taught by national and international practicing studio artists and faculty at colleges and universities. When attending an Arrowmont workshop, you have the option to stay on campus, where you’ll have meals provided and access to special events. Most workshops are open to students of all skill levels unless noted otherwise.
