Look Rock

Look Rock is a natural observation ledge that overlooks The Great Smoky Mountians National Park with a 360 degree panoramic view of the Smokies. Look Rock is located on Foothills Parkway and is the highest point along the 18 mile road. There is also a picnic area and a campground at Look Rock which is maintained by the National Parks Service, and an observation tower that is open to the public.

Look Rock Tower

To get to the tower you must take the 1/2 mile hike. The visibility from the observation tower can be up to 40 miles on clear days. On hazy days the visibility is much less, but the view is still one of the best around. The railing on the tower is low, so if you bring children, be sure to keep an eye on them. There is also a natural observation on the opposite side of the Look Rock parking lot, although it still harbors beautiful views, it does not offer the 360 degree panoramic view like the tower.

Look Rock Campground

Look Rock also has a campground with restrooms and running water, but there is no hot water or showers, nor RV hook ups. 68 campsites are available on a first come first serve basis, and cost $14 each. Each campsite has a picnic area, a fire grate and a clear spot for a tent, and even though hook ups are not available, RV’s are welcome. Reservations are not available, but Look Rock campground rarely fills up to capacity.
