Trail Description

This 7.7 mile segment of the Appalachian Trail will take you to the highest point in the Smokies, but the incline of the trail is not as difficult as you might think. There are many ups and downs and sections of level ground.

Newfound Gap is only accessible if US 441 (Newfound Gap Road) is open, so during the winter months be sure to check Smokies Road Info.

To reach the trailhead, park in the Newfound Gap parking lot and find a crosswalk on US 441. Use extreme caution here as most drivers are not inclined to stop. You will find the trailhead directly across the street.
