Trail Description Written by Caroline Sullivan

Sugarland Mountain Trail is nearly 12 miles long but can be hiked in several different portions. The lower part of the trail begins on Little River Road at Fighting Creek Gap just west of the Sugarlands Visitor Center and directly across from the trailhead for Laurel Falls Trail, and the higher part can be accessed via Clingmans Dome Road (closed in winter) across from the trailhead for Fork Ridge Trail. Hike 0.2 of a mile on the AT to reach Sugarland Mountain Trail.

Sugarland Mountain Trail can be divided into 3 sections: the first 3.1 miles between Little River Road and Huskey Gap Trail, the middle 4.1 miles between Huskey Gap and Rough Creek Trail, and the final 4.8 miles between Rough Creek and the Appalachian Trail. The final stretch passes the Mount Collins backcountry shelter and is host to the most spectacular views on the trail.
