Brushy Mountain Prison

Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary was a maximum security prison from 1896 to 2009 that held some notable convicts, such as Martin Luther King Jr's assassin, James Earl Ray. Because of its remote location, escape attempts were infrequent. Ray and six other inmates once climbed a fence to escape, but he was captured 58 hours later. The historic facility has since been converted into a crime museum offering self-guided tours that you will certainly never forget.

Elkmont Ghost Town

In the early 1900s the tourism community of Elkmont, TN took residence in what is now the national park. More than 70 vacation cottages were built in the area. After the park was established and the cottage owners' leases expired, the NPS decided to let nature reclaim these buildings.

Hike To Charlies Bunion

The 8 mile roundtrip hike to Charlies Bunion via the Appalachian Trail is certainly not the easiest hike in the national park, but the destination is worth it. Along the wooded hiking trail you'll come across sweeping mountain views in surprising places, peaking through the trees. But there is no view like the one from the rocky knob at the end.

The Smoky Mountains are full of eye-catching attractions and popular landmarks, but one many visitors don't know about is the Salt & Pepper Shaker Museum. This museum is the only one of its kind in the whole world. Inside, you can view over 20,000 pairs of shakers. The shakers show how the world has changed over the years, with some coming from ancient times!

Backcountry Camping

Maybe you're not the glamping type. In that case, check out the many backcountry campsites in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Score a permit from the NPS, choose your hike, pack your bags, and head into the wilderness. Don't forget to do your research! Camping in the backcountry is not for rookie backpackers.

The Gatlinburg Inn

Fans of the Tennessee Vols might know a little something about the history of The Gatlinburg Inn: it was the location where the song Rocky Top was written in 1967 by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. You can even visit the exact place where it was written in Room 388.

Bristol Motor Speedway

Bristol Motor Speedway, located in the Tri-Cities of East Tennessee, is one of the most popular NASCAR short tracks in the country. With a capacity of 162,000, it is the third largest sports venue in America. The annual night race at Bristol is considered one of NASCAR's top 10, and it can be tough to attain tickets. Not a fan of loud cars going in circles? Try driving on the speedway yourself in the winter time for Shadrack's Christmas Wonderland.

Hike To Andrews Bald

Clingmans Dome Trailhead

At 5,860 feet in elevation, Andrews Bald is the highest bald in the national park. The hike to reach it is short but moderate in difficulty. Start at Clingmans Dome and head for Forney Ridge Trail for 1.8 miles to reach the magnificent views and flame azaleas.

Davy Crockett Birthplace

Davy Crockett was more than just a guy wearing a raccoon on his head; he was a politician, a soldier and a pioneer. His birthplace is located in Limestone, Tennessee (about a half hour drive southwest from Johnson City) and was turned into a state park in 1973, 187 years after he was born. Stop by the park to learn more about the life and death of this famous Tennessean and why his legacy is worth remembering.

Soaky Mountain Waterpark

The new waterpark just off exit 407 opened in 2020 and has been jam-packed with fun every since. Soaky Mountain Waterpark is a 50 acre playground with all the classic wet and wild activies you look for in a waterpark: a wave pool, lazy river, state-of-the-art waterslides, and even the Avalaunch, a first of its kind watercoaster. There are different areas for different ages too, so bring the whole family.

Carver's Apple Orchard

Carver's Orchard & Applehouse Restaurant is a treasure on the Cosby side of the Smoky Mountains. Since the 1940s, Kyle Carver and his family have been growing apples on their 75 acre family farm. Stop by to buy apples, apple butter, fresh squeezed cider and their famous fried apple fritters. The farm also boasts a candy store and farm restaurant that serves home-cooked favorites catfish, pinto beans and country fried steak.

Rutherford Farms

Rutherford Farms is located in Maryville, Tennessee just a short drive from the Smoky Mountains. The farm has been open since 1976 and offers a variety of pre-picked and you-pick fruits and veggies throughout the year. They are most well known for their strawberries, but depending on the season they also offer green beans, sweet potatoes, broccoli and more. They take appointments for picking, so stop by and bring some Tennessee fruits and veggies home on your next trip.

Deer Farm & Petting Zoo

The Smoky Mountain Deer Farm & Exotic Petting Zoo is a great stop for animal lovers looking for close-up encounters. Guests can walk among the critters, which include camels, kangaroos, zebra, goats, reindeer, Elk, emu, deer, horses, cattle, Watusi, donkeys, zonkies and even more. You'll be able to pet and feed many of these animals and even take one of their horses for a ride.

The Townsend Wye

The Townsend Wye is a popular destination for swimming and water recreation in the Smokies. The Y is located right next to the GSMNP entrance in Townsend. It's a free opportunity to enjoy tubing and swimming during the summer. Go early to get parking and bring along a picnic, sunscreen and your own tubes and floats. Life jackets are highly encouraged and parents are reminded to watch children closely while they swim.

Max Patch

Hot Springs, North Carolina

Max Patch is one of the most popular places in the region to catch a sunrise or sunset. Max Patch is a 4,600 ft bald located along a section of the Appalachian Trail. It offers 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains on a clear day. Many visitors enjoy packing a tent and picnic and camping overnight during the warmer months in the year. During the fall, hikers are treated to spectacular views of the changing leaves.

Rocky Top Wine Trail

Sevierville & Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

The Rocky Top Wine Trail is a five-stop journey through the Great Smoky Mountains. Visitors stop at each of the wineries on the trail and receive free wine samples and a passport stamp. Guests who get all of their passport stamps will receive a free gift at the last winery on their trek.

Gatlinburg Craft Trail

Tucked away in Gatlinburg, shoppers will find the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community. Over 100 artists and craftsmen create their work and sell it in shops that can be found on an 8-mile loop. When you visit, you'll have an opportunity to meet many of the artists, see their creations and experience pieces of Appalachian culture.

English Mountain Trout Farm

Skip the classic restaurant option one night on your Smoky Mountain vacation and head to the English Mountain Trout Farm. Cherohala Skyway

The Cherohala Skyway is a 43 mile long scenic byway in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. It's considered one of the best motorcycle rides in North America, but you can also enjoy the sweeping mountain views and forested mountainsides by car. The skyway is best traveled on a clear day with moderate weather. Fun fact: the road got it's name from the combination of Cherokee and Nantahala, the two national forests the road passes through.

You'll find arcades, laser tag, classic carnival rides, and some unique things to do in Smoky Mountains like The Track's Blaster Boats, a fun and competitive take on bumper cars.

Backpack The AT (71.4 mi)

The Great Smoky Mountains portion of the Appalachian Trail is an awesome segment to try for those who don't want to backpack all 2,143 miles from Georgia to Maine. The trip takes an average of one week to complete, and you'll see some of the best views and highest points in all of the AT.

The Knoxville Sunsphere

This famous 75 foot golden glass sphere is impossible to miss in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. Since the 1982 World's Fair the structure has stood tall as a symbol for the city; you've likely seen it on postcards, advertisements, and even in a couple famous TV shows. Norris Lake

Norris Lake is a beautiful body of water located north of Knoxville, Tennessee. With more than 800 miles of shoreline, there's plenty to do both on and off the water. Rent a boat and pull a wakeboard behind you for some exciting water sports fun. Do some research on hydrobiking! There are also plenty of places to go swimming, fishing or camping. Grab dinner at one of the local marinas after a day of fun in the sun. It's a great family destination with activies for all ages.

Basketball Hall Of Fame

Since 1999 this 35,000 square foot facility in Knoxville has stood with its unique basketball crown to honor all levels of women's basketball. The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization whose mission is to "honor the past, celebrate the present, promote the future of women's basketball." Sports fans can enjoy touring the facility, but it's also a great location for special events (wedding receptions, birthday parties, and even proms).

Gatlinburg Chili Cookoff

One of Gatlinburg's most recognizable fall events is the Gatlinburg Chili Cookoff. Bush's Chili Beans puts on the event, where festival-goers can sample chili from many of the area's restaurants. Vendors are competing for the People's Choice award, Best Booth Presentation and more.
